Apparently, Lady Gaga, 25, isn’t the only fashionista in the family. She’s also not the only member of her family to have attended a prestigious school in New York and earn enviable professional work at a young age, either!
According to an article from ContactMusic.com, Lady Gaga’s younger sister, Natali Germanotta, 19, is studying fashion at Parsons University, and apparently, she’s been hired on to design costumes for an upcoming off-Broadway show. The show is titled “Simon Says” and is about a group of strangers who meet at a séance.
Germonatta has been spotted at press events with her sister, and has even made a cameo appearance in Gaga’s video for the song “Telephone.”
This whole thing got me to thinking about what it would mean to earn a fashion degree, and what it might enable one to do if they had a unique vision, and were calculating enough to realize it. Lady Gaga is an exceptional example of someone who has used multiple avenues towards her own artistic ends.
Part of what makes earning a degree in fashion design so thrilling is that there are so many interesting points and places where fashion converges with other artistic media. Think about it. Fashion and film. Fashion and music. Fashion and photography. Fashion and television. There are so many areas where fashion overlaps with so many other exciting disciplines.
Gaga is fascinating today because she occupies her own sort of niche within the center of all of these worlds.
Think about how these multimedia markets (music, video, and fashion) differ today from, say, the early 1980’s and the birth of MTV. Shortly after the network’s launch, videos became the dominant medium for promoting and marketing music. The image and the sound became inseparable in many ways. While there was perhaps a long history of artists who relied on imagery and theatrical devices to promote their music, it really took on a whole new meaning, just as we’re seeing today, with rapid advances in interactive media.
This really is a fantastic time to earn a degree in fashion from an online or campus school. The right tutelage could help ensure that a budding fashionista build a stellar portfolio. A stellar portfolio and the right degree from the right fashion school could ensure that you break into the industry.
Even if Lady Gaga isn’t your older sister, if you’ve got a keen eye, and your highly motivated, attaining your degree is totally feasible, and there are many resources out there at your disposal.
This is a great time to get your Gaga on.
