English Composition Course Required for Most Degree Programs

English Composition I is a college course that is considered a general education requirement.  This means that for most degree programs, from mathematics to criminal justice, you will probably run into this course in your first couple of years in college.

You might think, “Why do I need to take English for the career that I am choosing?” Well, the number of careers that make use of having good communication skills is quite large.  In fact, some of them might surprise you!

Here are just a few surprising professions that require strong English skills, according to the U.S. Department of Labor:

Electrical Engineer: These professionals must be able to communicate the needs and specifications of electrical equipment. This includes being able to do so in writing.

Police Detectives: When they are working a case, detectives must create written reports to turn into their commanding officers.

Aviation Inspectors: As they repair and inspect aviation equipment, these professionals must write reports on their findings.

Computer Systems Engineers: Design concepts, changes, and advice on computer systems have to be written clearly. Good English skills help these professionals to do so.

Medical and Health Services Managers: These professionals may be an office manager of a doctor’s office or manage an entire hospital.  Either way, they have to have strong written communication skills to manage staff or departments.

Financial Analysts: People who analyze financial data for the purpose of advising people and businesses don’t just work with numbers. They must write forecasts and present written reports on their findings.

I think this is a great idea. I have been considering online school for a while and would love to try it. How long are the trial courses? Are they actual courses?

I am interest in going back to school online and will try one of the test drive courses. I need to buy a laptop in order to get my online degree. Can you tell me if I can deduct that purchase from my taxes?

Of course English is a requirement! How else will an institution know you can actually speak the language of this fine country? I believe an online course in such things would be the least one should consider D:

If I remember correctly English is the second most widely spoken language after Chinese so it only makes sense to take the course!

I just enrolled in English 101 and did not realize how little I knew about grammer and punctuation. How many English courses are recommended for a bachelors degree?

I absolutely vote for this article. I found that English must be a required course for any kinds of degree. Now , I am taking composition course at my Evergreen College. I love this course, however it takes me a lot of time to think for an essay topic.

I didn’t really pay much attention in high school and did the bare minimum to coast on by. When I got into college my major ended up requiring a lot of paper writing and I was sorely unprepared for it. If I hadn’t taken my English Composition seriously I’d have been in deep trouble. I can’t stress enough to anyone reading this who hasn’t already taken English Comp to NOT blow it off because it will seriously come back to bite them in the behind if they do.
