Census Reports That More Women are Earning Bachelor’s Degrees

A recent report from the Census Bureau revealed that women in their mid-twenties have become more likely to have a bachelors degree. In fact, the report states that 35 percent of women and 27 percent of men aged 25 to 29 held bachelor’s degrees or higher in 2009.

The census also found that the overall number of people who hold bachelors degrees increased by 34 percent between 1999 and 2009. This means that more Americans are focusing on their education, which can lead to increased job opportunities.

Many of these students are choosing to study online because of the flexibility that is provided through independent learning via a computer. Online learning also has the added benefit of teaching individuals new technical skills. For instance, because of the format that courses are taught in, an online bachelor’s degree encourages students to use social networks and web-based video conferencing.

These skills will come in handy when they graduate, giving them a competitive edge over others who earned degrees through conventional, campus-based programs.

Some women may find that online degree programs also help them be successful in earning their bachelor’s degrees. Those who have families can do school work when and where they choose, therefore they do not have to sacrifice quality time with their children.

I’m currently pregnant with my third baby. If I start online classes now would I be able to take leave for a few weeks? Maybe I could take a laptop to the dr office!

LOL @ Jason. Thanks for this article, but I’m still afraid as a mother to be distracted from my kids, even at a computer I mean, how many hours a week on average would I have to dedicate?

I work full time and take my classes at home online. It is so great to be able to go home, change into comfortable clothes, turn on my computer and attend class. This is a wonderful thing.

I have always wanted to finish getting my bachelors degree, but I need to work to support my children. I just took my first online class and it is the best thing that was ever invented. I will now finish my degree and get a better job.

I think it’s great that more women are going to school for bachelors degrees. Is the system for scholarships as willing to give scholarships to women as to men?

Hi Dale, that is a good question. Scholarships can be based on many things like GPA, ethnicity, sports, volunteer hours and more. That being said, some scholarships are available for only men and only women. But for the most part scholarships are equal opportunity and take into consideration things like merit and academics.

The best part about online learning for women is that we can focus on our family lives too. For the single mothers out there, are there any scholarships?
